In the past few hours, Italian political debate has heated up around statements by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni , who harshly attacked the left, accusing it of resorting to international judicial instruments to attack the government, which she believes is incapable of prevailing in internal democratic debate. The direct reference is to the position taken by some opposition figures regarding the request for the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes committed in the Gaza Strip.

Avs's complaint against the Italian government

On Wednesday, the Green and Left Alliance announced, during a press conference in the Chamber of Deputies, its intention to file a complaint with the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. The accusation leveled against the Italian government is complicity in international crimes committed in the Gaza Strip .

The initiative was presented by MPs Angelo Bonelli, co-spokesperson for the Greens, and Nicola Fratoianni, secretary of the Italian Left, supported by Triestino Mariniello, professor of international criminal law at Liverpool John Moores University and a former member of the legal team representing Palestinian victims before the ICC.

According to Mariniello, the complaint is based on Italy's continued supply of weapons and military equipment to Israel, in a context in which the latter is accused of violating international law. The jurist emphasized that if members of the Italian government were proven to be aware that their decisions facilitated the commission of international crimes, they could be held individually criminally liable.

Meloni launches a harsh attack on the left

The move prompted a reaction from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who harshly criticized the initiative in a Facebook post, interpreting it as an attempt by the left to target the government through international judicial channels.

According to Meloni, faced with the impossibility of prevailing in the internal political debate , some opposition forces are seeking legitimacy abroad, even exploiting the tragic and complex Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The prime minister recalled how these same figures had previously urged the European Union to open infringement proceedings against Italy.

“Now they are even aiming for an international trial, bringing up the humanitarian drama in Gaza in a completely instrumental way, as if even this were our fault .”

Meloni's three accusations against the opposition

In her speech, Giorgia Meloni summarized in three points what she believed highlighted the opposition's attitude. First, she argued that the left, unable to prevail in internal political debate, systematically resorts to external support to weaken the government.

Second, she accused her opponents of ignoring Italy's international reputation , willing—in her view—to damage it for political gain. Finally, she argued that the left's strategy has now been reduced to a single objective: attempting to eliminate its opponent through legal action, having long since abandoned the path of democratic debate. This approach, she concluded, will not yield the desired result.
